Our weekly Library sessions develop pupils' abilities to listen, speak and read for a wide range of purposes.

Through an appreciation of books of all kinds and knowledge of data in a more general sense the pupils are able to express themselves creatively and imaginatively. Above all the aim is for them to become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama, as well as non-fiction text and be proficient in the art of information research and retrieval.

In Nursery and Kindergarten pupils choose, as a group, one of three books selected by the librarian to be read to them. The selection process highlights the cover illustration, title and author so that the pupils are encouraged to think about what the book might be about, whether they will like it, will it be funny or sad, is it an adventure story and so on.

In Year 1 and Year 2 pupils think about why we have a library and what is in the library. The main sections of Fiction and Reference are examined so that the children have a firm grasp of the basic organisation of the library. Different types of data resources are looked at and a simplified overview of the Dewey Decimal system is given. At each session, where appropriate, the children will borrow a book for reading at home.

Year 3 and 4 the Dewey Decimal system is studied more closely while studying the use of the library as a reference source. The sources for information gathering are widened. In addition the different types of fiction are studied. At each session, where appropriate, pupils will borrow a book for reading at home.
