At Kew College children enjoy mathematics and study it with confidence, achieving a high standard in numeracy and a range of other mathematical skills.

From Reception the emphasis is on developing numeracy skills. The curriculum introduces the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Mental arithmetic is encouraged and the use of practical equipment helps explain concepts. A wide variety of resources support learning and interactive whiteboards help engage the children in mathematical play and problem solving.

In the Junior House, the four operations are consolidated and extended. This is enriched by developing topics within shape, space, measure and handling data. Mental arithmetic and problem solving skills are extended. Skills are built upon and methods taught and reinforced using careful planning.

Children are challenged to think, and enjoy opportunities to practise and apply their learning. Expectations are kept high. By the time the children reach the top of the school they are confident in number work and have developed an enthusiastic and optimistic attitude.
