Making ‘The Rhythm of Childhood’
This film represent the exceptional work and enthusiasm of our Kew College pupils, for the 2006 ‘Take One Picture’ initiative. ‘Take One Picture’ is the National Gallery’s countrywide scheme for primary schools. Each year the Gallery focuses on one painting from the collection to inspire cross-curricular work in classrooms. The challenge is then for schools to use the image imaginatively in the classroom, both as a stimulus for artwork, and for work in more unexpected curriculum areas.

The Joy of Childhood
As part of the National Gallery’s ‘Take One Picture’ initiative in 2007, Kew College pupils from Nursery to Year 6 created some fantastic works of art, inspired by the 1629 painting ‘Two Boys and a Girl making Music’, by Jan Molenaer. We decided to make a short film to show off our extraordinary work. We hope you enjoy!

The Rhythm of Childhood
In 1629 a snapshot of childhood was captured, Jan Molenaer painted 3 children. They were locked up in a cellar to finish their homework… but not even a cellar is enough to distract from their imagination. With a chest full of old clothes, a room full of delightful sounding objects, and the joy of childhood, the children quickly got distracted. So, what if 1629 was 2006? This short film was inspired in part by the show ‘Stomp’, which uses a fantastic combination of percussion and movement.
